In 2022, Oglebay Institute completed restoration work at the Stifel Fine Arts Center to preserve the building for the century to come. Community support funded a new terra cotta tile roof, restoration to the front portico columns, brick repointing, and more. Now, the Stifel Fine Arts Center can continue to serve the community as an art gallery, a classroom, a neighborhood focal point, a concert venue, a monument to Wheeling history, and a place to create and connect for generations to come.
ABOUT THE STIFEL FINE ARTS CENTER
The Stifel Fine Arts Center is a bridge between the visual arts and the community and an exquisite visual symbol that the Ohio Valley values art, culture, and history.
The Stifel, built from 1910 to 1912, is a treasure trove for artistic expression and personal fulfillment. Classes, workshops, and events held in galleries, classrooms, and performance spaces engage more than 13,000 established and emerging artists, art lovers, musicians, students, educators, and families every year. Under the roof of the Stifel, lives are transformed through shared experiences in art.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
A century after it was built, the Stifel structure remains sound. Built of steel-reinforced concrete, it is designed to stand the test of time. However, despite routine care and maintenance, roof replacement is now a critical necessity. The current condition of the roof is causing interior and exterior damage that, if deferred, will lead to additional and more costly remediation efforts. Repairing that damage and replacing the roofing system will ensure that the Stifel Fine Arts Center can continue to serve the community as an art gallery, a classroom, a neighborhood focal point, a concert venue, a monument to Wheeling history, and a place to create and connect for generations to come.
This project is part of Oglebay Institute's $4.4 million Capital Campaign. The campaign also includes replacing the roof and completing other restoration work at Towngate Theatre; investing in exhibit development and audience engagement; and growing our institutional endowment.
